Negotiations At Work

Negotiating is a skill that must be honed. It’s important to be mentally prepared to win, do the groundwork before you start negotiating, and decide on the path you’re going to take. A good negotiator is an excellent communicator who understands how humans think, feel, and function. You must be able to befriend the people seated on the other side of the table and know when to push, accept a compromise, and when to walk away. Here are 10 Top Tactics for successful negotiations:

1. Be focused on the problem or issue. Logical arguments are the key to smooth negotiations.

2. Be firm yet polite when making a stand or presenting a point.

3. Clearly emphasize the advantages and disadvantages.

4. Be patient and let the process take its time.

5. Put ego aside and concentrate on the matter at hand. It’s finding a reasonable solution that’s important, not self-worth.

6. Never threaten or manipulate the opposite party; it’s unethical and unfair.

7. Aim for solutions that are in everyone’s interest, not ones that benefit only one side.

8. Be open-minded and know when to admit that you’re wrong.

9. Don’t accept weak solutions and try to negotiate a beneficial-to-all settlement.

10. Value time, schedules, and deadlines. A good negotiator will not waste time with useless talk; build some rapport, but then get down to business.

Negotiations are an art, and a good negotiator uses creativity and technique to achieve successful results.
