Health At Work

Now that Ramadan and Eid holidays are behind us, it’s time to focus on health at work. With busy schedules and sitting or standing a lot on the job comes a host of health issues that could be avoided or eased if we follow a few simple steps:

1 - Sitting is the new smoking - sitting is as detrimental to health as smoking. So, make sure you get up every 30 minutes, do a few stretches, and move for 5 minutes. Set reminders on your phone and use apps like StandUp or BreakTime to remind you.

2 - Practice good posture - while standing or sitting, it’s essential to have your back straight, feet on the ground, knees at 90°, and shoulders relaxed. This means you need to adjust your monitor and keyboard so that they are at comfortable levels.

3 - Stay hydrated - most people drink too much caffeine and not enough water, which impairs cognitive functions. Keep a large water bottle at your desk, aim to finish it by lunch, then refill it. If plain water feels boring, add lemon or mint for flavor.

4 - Breathe and micro-meditate - many experts swear by the Box Meditation (breathe in for a count of 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4). You could also use apps like Headspace or Calm, which offer short mindfulness meditations and breath-work.

5 - Exercise at work and after - add desk and chair exercises throughout your day. You could find many such exercises online or in apps like Down Dog, which has quick office yoga workouts, or Pocket Physio for approved physio workouts. Then, after work, head straight to the gym before you get lazy.

Remember - healthy body, healthy mind; the two go hand in hand and are infinitely intertwined.
